A Portrait of the Permanent Diaconate: A Study for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops 2009-2010

April, 2010 - In fall 2009, CARA contacted the directors of all diaconate formation programs in its Catholic Ministry Formation database to request their cooperation in completing the survey. This survey asked about the number of permanent deacons in the diocese, including those in active ministry and those retired. Using the responses to this survey, CARA is able to estimate the total number of permanent deacons in the United States, and include information on their ministries.

Catholic Ministry Formation Enrollments: Statistical Overview

May, 2010
The latest statistics on current enrollments in U.S. Catholic ministry formation programs are now available from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University. CARA collects enrollment data on every Catholic ministry formation program that prepares men and women for ministry in the U.S. Church as priests, deacons, and lay ecclesial ministers. This statistical overview of enrollment data is published annually and a complete directory, listing the names, addresses, and other pertinent information on each program is published every other year. Catholic Media Use in the United States

March, 2006
In fall 2005, CARA conducted a national poll of adult Catholics designed to provide a comprehensive portrait of their media use for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The survey was completed by 1,260 self-identified Catholics who were 18 years of age or older. This report provides the results of this survey including U.S. adult Catholics' use of print, television, radio, and Internet media.

Marriage in the Catholic Church: A Survey of U.S. Catholics

October, 2007
In summer 2007, CARA conducted a national poll of adult Catholics designed to provide a comprehensive portrait of marriage for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The survey was completed by 1,008 self-identified Catholics who were 18 years of age or older (margin of sampling error of ± 3.1 percentage points). This report provides the results of this survey including: (1) awareness of and understanding of Catholic Church teaching on marriage, (2) general attitudes about marriage, and (3) personal experiences of marriage preparation, the sacrament of marriage, and daily married life.

Sacraments Today: Belief and Practice among U.S. Catholics

April, 2008
In February 2008 CARA surveyed 1,007 self-identified adult Catholics in the United States for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to learn about contemporary participation in the sacramental life of the Church as well as beliefs about the sacraments. The survey also addresses many other issues of importance to the Church, including other forms of participation in Church life and other teachings of Catholicism.
