Mark M. Gray, Ph.D.

Mark M. Gray is the Director of CARA Catholic Polls (CCP) and a Senior Research Associate at CARA. He has a Ph.D. in Political Science and a M.A. in Social Sciences from the University of California, Irvine.

Methodologically, Mark specializes in survey research, demographic studies, trend analysis, and cross-sectional time-series studies. Some of his recent work at CARA has included national surveys of adult Catholics, surveys for Catholic schools, diocesan-level trend analyses, program evaluations, and Catholic media use studies. Academically his research focuses on political culture, political participation, religion and politics, mass media, popular culture, and the history of exploration. His research has appeared in Comparative Political Studies, International Organization, Review of Religious Research, PS: Political Science & Politics, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Presidential Studies Quarterly, European Review, and Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice.

He has taught courses on Introduction to the Social Sciences, Catholic Culture, American Popular Culture, History of the Future, Catholicism on Film, Human Exploration and Discovery, and The History and Politics of Food. In 2014, 2015, and 2023 he received the Outstanding Faculty Award from Georgetown University’s Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program.

As a graduate student he worked as a journalist for The Orange County Register. He is the editor of CARA’s research blog: 1964.
